How can Doc Gooden not be invited back to Shea Stadium?
...to "peel off a number" for games remaining at Shea. Whether anyone likes it or not, he can't be overlooked, he was an integral part of the team's history at Shea Stadium.
It's the teams judgement as to whether Gooden (whom I agree was a big part of Mets history) should be included or not. And they must consider and honor the feelings of other players that will be involved.
Many folks don't like the stigma of drugs.
Randy - While I agree that once a person crosses the threshold into drug addiction they can never return, my experience and that of millions of other recovering drug addicts is that in order for an addict in recovery to live clean, it is very helpful to have the support of those around him/her.
We frown upon the adage that "once an addict always an addict" because of the inherent ignorance that suggests that all addicts never have the hope of going - and staying - clean.
God willing, I'll be clean 4 years on July 6.
